Recent analyses highlight Michigan's low accident rates and ongoing safety initiatives |
Michigan drivers have earned top marks for safety, with recent studies highlighting the state's low accident rates and proactive safety measures.
A LendingTree analysis of insurance data from January to September 2025 found that Michigan had the fewest driving incidents per 1,000 drivers, recording just 11.28 incidents. This includes the lowest accident rate at 10 per 1,000 drivers. However, the state ranked 18th in DUI rates, with 1.6 incidents per 1,000 drivers.
In response to these findings, Michigan has intensified its commitment to road safety. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Advisory Commission (GTSAC) launched the SAFER by 2030 initiative, aiming to reduce traffic fatalities by 30% by 2030. This comprehensive plan focuses on awareness, engagement, and enforcement to address risky driving behaviors.
Additionally, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has secured $11 million in federal grants to enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety across eight counties. These funds will support the construction of pathways, crossings, sidewalks, and bike facilities, further promoting safe travel for all road users.
These concerted efforts underscore Michigan's dedication to maintaining and improving its standing as a leader in driver safety nationwide. |
