Milford Independent Cinema to Close After Over 50 Years |
Beloved community theater announces permanent closure amid financial challenges |
After more than five decades of serving the Milford community, the Milford Independent Cinema will permanently close its doors on January 31, 2026.
The nonprofit theater cites financial struggles, industry changes, and rising operational costs as the primary reasons for this difficult decision.
Board member Bryan Gutierrez expressed deep emotion over the closure, stating, "We love our people, we love this place."
He emphasized that the decision was driven by financial realities.
In 2020, Gutierrez and other board members transformed the family-owned theater into a nonprofit organization, the Huron Valley Film Organization, in an effort to save it from closure.
Initially, the theater benefited from three large corporate sponsors, which provided crucial support during the early years.
However, the loss of this funding, coupled with declining attendance and industry shifts toward streaming services, has made it increasingly difficult to sustain operations.
Board member Julie Lin noted that despite efforts to adapt by expanding offerings to include events like trivia nights and Academy Awards celebrations, the theater could not overcome the financial challenges.
Milford resident Amelia Price, who has fond memories of attending the theater for birthday parties during her elementary school years, expressed sadness over the closure but acknowledged the impact of streaming services on movie-going habits.
While the community has shown support through attendance and donations, board members indicate that a significant last-minute donation of tens of thousands of dollars would be necessary to keep the theater open.
Gutierrez emphasized that such an investment would be in the community itself.
The theater will remain open through January 31, with final screenings and special events planned in the coming weeks.
For those interested in contributing to save the theater, donations can be made through the theater's official channels. |
