Trump Proposes $2,000 Tariff Dividend Amid Economic Debate

Trivia Question❓In which township in Michigan can you find the oldest standing structure, the Pettibone Creek Hydroelectric Station, which was built in 1906? Answer at the bottom of the newsletter |
Donald Trump is proposing a $2,000 “tariff dividend” for most Americans, funded by taxes collected from imported goods.
This payment would go to adults earning under $100,000, leaving out high-income earners.
While the government recently collected $195 billion in customs duties, experts say that covering the dividend for roughly 150 million Americans would cost $300 billion — far exceeding current tariff revenues.
Legal questions loom as the Supreme Court reviews whether tariffs imposed under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act can stand.
If the Court blocks these tariffs, the government might owe refunds, further straining funding for the plan.
Critics also worry such direct payments could fuel inflation, recalling price spikes after recent pandemic-era stimulus.
The fate of the dividend proposal is uncertain as legal, financial, and economic challenges intensify. Read More... |
Snowfall combined with gusty winds is raising concerns for near-blizzard and ground blizzard conditions in the coming days across the region. Blizzard warnings require sustained winds of at least 35 mph and reduced visibility below a quarter mile for at least three consecutive hours, along with falling snow. Forecasts for Wednesday and Thursday show visibility dropping, but average wind speeds are expected to remain between 20 and 30 mph—just under the official blizzard threshold. The term "near-blizzard conditions" better fits this situation, as wind gusts may still cause hazardous travel even if criteria aren't fully met. Ground blizzards are more rare, occurring when strong winds whip existing snow around after snowfall has ended, reducing visibility near the surface. Even areas expecting less than two inches of snow, including parts of southeast Michigan, could experience these dangerous conditions. Read More... |
Melody Wright, a leading housing analyst, warns the U.S. real estate market could face a price correction more severe than the 2008 crash.
She forecasts home prices may tumble by up to 50% as early as next year, driven by the need for prices to realign with median household incomes.
Current trends amplify her concern: inventory is rising, demand is slipping, and many Sunbelt and Southern cities are already seeing marked price reductions.
Nationally, price increases have nearly stalled, with October’s median sale price barely 1.2% higher year-over-year at $439,701.
According to Zillow, 53% of homes have dropped in value over the past year.
Despite slight affordability gains, many buyers remain priced out by high costs.
Wright cautions that neglected investor-owned homes could deepen the downturn, potentially accelerating declines even further.
Stakeholders are bracing as the market approaches a potentially volatile period. Read More... |
