Trivia Question❓

In the townships of Highland, White Lake, and Commerce in Michigan, what historic event took place in 1812 that named this area after a specific type of tree?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Mike Riley, a 58-year-old long-haul truck driver and widower, arrived at his son Jason’s elite high school for Career Day, standing out among polished professionals in luxury suits.

Despite initial skepticism based on his rough, working hands, Riley spoke powerfully about the essential, often invisible, role that truck drivers and other blue-collar workers play in keeping the country running.

He shared stories from the pandemic and harsh winters, highlighting how vital logistical workers are—delivering life-saving supplies when most people stayed safe at home.

Riley emphasized that such careers are not fallback options, but foundations of society.

The message resonated as students and faculty listened, breaking social barriers between status and work.

Afterward, his son’s pride shined through, reaffirming that dignity lies in every honest trade.

Riley’s story is a reminder that the backbone of America isn’t built in boardrooms, but by those who keep the world moving.

The Detroit coney dog is much more than a simple hot dog — it’s a symbol of city pride and late-night loyalty.

This iconic dish features a natural-casing hot dog nestled in a steamed bun, topped with savory, bean-free meat sauce, yellow mustard, and chopped onions — and nothing extra.

Tracing its roots to Greek immigrants in early-1900s Detroit, the coney’s chili sauce is a local invention, distinct from Texas or Cincinnati chili.

Loyalty flares fiercest between Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island, two legendary rivals serving up the same classic fare mere steps apart downtown.

To locals, the coney is more than food — it’s comfort after concerts, games, or midnight adventures, devoured quickly in bustling crowds.

Forget trendy toppings or fancy presentations; the Detroit coney thrives on tradition, unchanging for generations and always ready when the city needs it most.

Detroit’s coney dog isn’t just here — it’s here to stay.

Quote Of The Day

"Stay close to anything that makes you glad you are alive."

Michigan high school students could soon earn academic credit for elective firearm safety courses, thanks to legislation recently passed by the state House of Representatives.

House Bill 4285 and Senate Bill 58 would permit public and charter schools to offer gun safety instruction during the school day.

Supporters, including State Senator Jon Bumstead of Norton Shores, say the aim is to give students crucial hunter safety training, especially those without family hunting backgrounds.

Students would learn about different firearm types, usage, handling, cleaning, and safe hunting practices.

No live firearms or ammunition will be present in classrooms, and only certified hunter education instructors can teach these courses.

Enrollment is strictly voluntary, with parents allowed to opt their children out.

The bills await Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s approval, potentially launching a shift toward broader firearm safety education in Michigan schools.

💡 Answer to Trivia Question:
The Treaty of Saginaw was signed in 1812, resulting in the cession of land by the Ojibwe, Ottawa, and Potawatomi tribes to the United States government. This land was named after the white pine trees that grew abundantly in the area, hence the name "White Lake Township."
