NOTE:  If you are to young to think this will effect you, and you have parents or grandparents, guess who is going to be running all their errands and shopping and endless Doctors appointments.

Michigan lawmakers are considering major changes for older drivers.

A new bill led by State Senator Rosemary Bayer (D-West Bloomfield) proposes age-based retesting for license renewals.

If passed, drivers aged 75 to 84 would need to complete a vision exam, written test, and road skills test every four years.

For those 85 and older, the same tests would be required annually.

This effort follows a deadly 2024 crash involving a 94-year-old Milford Township resident, fueling debates about safety gaps for senior drivers.

Supporters cite data showing a steep rise in fatal crashes among drivers 65-plus, while AARP Michigan opposes age-only criteria, urging health-based evaluations instead.

The bill, now in the Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, faces questions over its $6 million annual cost and logistical impact statewide.

Currently, Michigan has no automatic age-based retesting for driver’s licenses.

DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital has launched a 24/7 OB hospitalist program and dedicated Obstetric Emergency Department, bringing round-the-clock specialized care to Commerce Township.

This initiative means a board-certified OB/GYN is always onsite, ready to manage emergencies and support over 800 annual deliveries.

Partnering with the Ob Hospitalist Group, the hospital now responds instantly to critical events like severe hypertension and maternal hemorrhage, while helping reduce primary C-section rates through hands-on, in-hospital care.

The hospitalists work closely with the Level III NICU to ensure at-risk newborns receive immediate, advanced care.

This round-the-clock system also frees local OB/GYNs from late-night emergencies, supporting both patient safety and physician well-being.

For Commerce Township’s growing community, the initiative signifies a new era in maternal and neonatal safety and care.

If you're around Milford in April, it’s a great month to get outside before the summer crowds arrive. Here are some of the best things to do:

  • Walk or bike the trails at Kensington Metropark. April is when the marshes, woods, and bike paths start coming alive again, and you’ll usually see early spring flowers and migrating birds.
  • Spend an afternoon in downtown Milford browsing shops, coffee houses, and the riverfront. Downtown Milford typically begins its spring event season in April with local pop-up sales, live music, and weekend activities.
  • Visit the Suzanne Haskew Arts Center (The SHAC). They usually offer spring art classes, exhibits, and craft workshops throughout April. It’s one of the best indoor options if the weather is chilly.
  • Run or watch the Michigan Made Run in downtown Milford on April 18. The event includes a half marathon, 10K, and 5K starting in Central Park.
  • If you enjoy unique races, the Prove It 5K & 10K takes place April 18 at the usually closed-to-the-public GM Milford Proving Ground. It’s one of the few chances each year to get inside the proving grounds.
  • Explore Central Park and the Huron River in the center of town. April is a good time for walking the river trail, photography, or grabbing lunch and eating outside if the weather cooperates.
  • Go birdwatching or hiking at Proud Lake State Recreation Area just south of Milford. April is especially good for seeing waterfowl, deer, and early spring wildlife.
  • Take a short drive to Indian Springs Metropark for hiking, nature trails, and the Environmental Discovery Center.
  • Around Easter weekend, Milford and nearby communities usually host Easter egg hunts and spring family events during the first week of April. Similar spring activities are taking place across southeast Michigan this year.
  • If you like antiques and small-town shopping, downtown Milford’s Main Street is especially nice in April when the patios and storefronts begin reopening for the season.

For a classic April day in Milford: start with breakfast downtown, walk the river and Central Park, then spend the afternoon at Kensington or Proud Lake.
