Every February 2, the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, becomes the focus of national attention as a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil “predicts” the end of winter.
This quirky celebration has deep roots, tracing back to ancient Imbolc festivals marking winter’s midpoint and evolving into the Christian holiday Candlemas, when weather lore began linking sunlight with a longer winter.
German settlers in Pennsylvania replaced their old weather-watching badgers with the native groundhog— giving birth to a distinctly American twist.
In 1887, a local newspaper editor helped launch the first “official” Groundhog Day event at Gobbler’s Knob.
Decades later, the 1993 Bill Murray film “Groundhog Day” turned this local oddity into an internationally recognized spectacle, drawing tens of thousands of visitors annually.

Fort Mackinac rises majestically above Mackinac Island, guarding local history and sparking the imaginations of both visitors and locals.
While known as a historic landmark of the Great Lakes, the fort is shrouded in legends about a lost cache of British gold, rumored to have been hidden during the chaos of the early 1800s.
British forces captured Fort Mackinac in 1812 and held it for three tense years.
According to local lore, as the British prepared to evacuate in 1815, an officer—fearing theft—supposedly buried part of the army payroll in or around the fort.
Despite modern archaeology yielding no gold, the idea of buried treasure endures in community storytelling.
The legend weaves together fact and folklore, inviting residents and treasure seekers alike to imagine what secrets may still linger beneath the island’s limestone bluffs. Read More... |
