On September 11, 2001, First Lieutenant Heather "Lucky" Penney, just 26 years old and one of the few female fighter pilots at Andrews Air Force Base, was sent on a desperate mission over Washington, D.C.
With no live ammunition loaded on her F-16, Penney and her commanding officer, Lt. Col. Marc Sasseville, were ordered to intercept hijacked United Flight 93 by any means necessary.
Armed only with their jets, they prepared for what would be a suicide mission to protect the nation’s capital—willing to sacrifice their lives if needed.
Ultimately, the intervention was not required: the courageous passengers aboard Flight 93 fought back, bringing down the plane near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Penney, who later served in Iraq and mentored fellow pilots, considers herself not a hero, but a servant of duty—a powerful reminder of readiness and selfless courage in the face of crisis. Read More... |
