Trivia Question❓

The Village of Milford in Michigan is known for having an unusual "claim to fame" involving a specific type of food. What is it?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

DETROIT—Five people from Dearborn and Inkster, Michigan, were arrested by the FBI on Friday, disrupting an alleged terrorist plot timed for Halloween weekend.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated the suspects referred to the day as "pumpkin day" and were plotting a violent attack.

Federal raids took place across the Detroit area, including near Fordson High School in Dearborn, where key evidence was secured.

Details remain scarce on the precise targets, but officials confirmed the group had firearms and was closely monitored to avert danger.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer praised the rapid efforts of law enforcement, reaffirming the priority of resident safety.

The arrests highlight persistent concerns over domestic extremism and potential overseas links, as investigations continue into the scope of the threat.

General Motors (GM) is cutting around 1,700 jobs at its Michigan and Ohio manufacturing plants, reacting to a slump in electric vehicle (EV) demand.

Roughly 1,200 jobs are being eliminated at GM’s all-electric factory in the Detroit area.

In Warren, Ohio, Ultium Cells—a battery facility run with LG Energy Solution—will let go of 550 workers.

Additional temporary layoffs are expected across the company.

These reductions come as GM faces slower short-term EV adoption and shifting regulatory pressures, but the automaker claims it remains invested in the U.S. workforce.

Battery cell production in both Ohio and Tennessee will pause in early 2026 for facility upgrades, aiming to restart by mid-year.

The crisis is compounded by the loss of federal EV tax credits, previously up to $7,500.

Recent layoffs have also affected GM’s salaried staff in Detroit and its IT center in Georgia, highlighting industrywide struggles to match supply with uncertain market demand.

Michigan’s push to become a leader in electric vehicle battery manufacturing has hit a major snag.

Our Next Energy (ONE), helmed by Mujeeb Ijaz, secured $70 million in state support and pledged to deliver 2,000 new jobs in Van Buren Township.

Recently, however, ONE issued significant layoffs and is leaving its facility, failing to meet its hiring goals.

This mirrors A123 Systems—also led by Ijaz—which previously accepted nearly $400 million in public funding before collapsing into bankruptcy a decade ago.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer had championed ONE’s promise of jobs and economic growth, but the abrupt reversal has residents questioning the wisdom of large public investments in high-risk startups.

The cautionary outcome highlights tough choices ahead as Michigan weighs support for innovative industries against taxpayer protection.

🍤 15-Minute Spicy Shrimp Scampi for Two 🍝

This dish is quick, flavorful, and feels a little fancy without a lot of effort.

Ingredients

  • For the Pasta:

    • 4 oz dried Linguine or Spaghetti (about half a standard serving for two)

    • Salt for boiling water

  • For the Scampi:

    • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil

    • 1 tablespoon Butter

    • 2 cloves Garlic, minced

    • 1/4 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes (or more, to taste)

    • 1/2 pound Shrimp, peeled and deveined (fresh or thawed frozen)

    • 1/4 cup Dry White Wine (like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc) or Chicken Broth

    • 2 tablespoons Lemon Juice

    • 1/4 cup chopped fresh Parsley

    • Salt and Black Pepper to taste

    • Grated Parmesan Cheese for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Pasta: Bring a small pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to package directions until al dente (firm to the bite). Reserve about $1/2$ cup of the starchy pasta water before draining. Drain the pasta and set aside.

  2. Sauté Aromatics: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter with the olive oil. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes. Sauté for about 30-60 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to let the garlic burn.

  3. Cook the Shrimp: Add the shrimp to the skillet in a single layer. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the shrimp are just starting to turn pink.

  4. Deglaze: Pour in the white wine (or broth) and lemon juice. Bring to a simmer and let it cook for about 1 minute, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

  5. Toss and Finish: Add the cooked pasta and $1/4$ cup of the reserved pasta water to the skillet. Toss everything to coat in the sauce. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash more pasta water.

  6. Serve: Stir in the fresh parsley. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt, pepper, or lemon juice if needed. Divide between two bowls and top with Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Tips for Success

  • Prep First: Have your garlic minced and parsley chopped before you start cooking the shrimp, as it comes together very fast.

  • Don't Overcook the Shrimp: They cook quickly! As soon as they are pink and curled, they are done.

  • Serving Suggestion: Serve with a simple side salad of mixed greens or some toasted crusty bread for soaking up the delicious sauce.
